Default Favorite guitar tone from a modern bluesman

Who's guitar tone today is giving you chills when you listen to them? I feel too many of the modern guys are relying too much on pedals and gadgets - too much gain. It masks up the human touch, IMO.

I really like the sounds Buddy Whittington gets. He's mostly a guitar into amp guy and uses Dr Z amps. But I can hear what the guitar sounds like-like when he plays his 63 Strat it sounds like a Strat etc. You can hear the wood.

    Is Ronnie Earl modern?
A Strat, a Super Reverb and a cable to connect 'em.

Yeah, Buddy's got great tone and his chops are so tasteful. I respect a Bluesman who's direct axe to amp.

Ya know how the great Roy Buchanan had that classic (predictable) Tele spank? Well, to my ear, Buddy's got just a bit of his own distinctive dirt, so "Tele spank" is not at all what I hear.

I'm not a huge John Mayer fan - he makes a lot of superficial music in my opinion. But some of his blues playing is real nice and he does have sweeeet tone.

Didn't Buddy play with John Mayall? That guitarist position is always changing.

    I'd say Ronnie is modern.

Mayer's a great player, not very original though IMO.

I also like Whittinton's playing and tone. He knows what he's doing and does not fall into playing too much and too many meaningless notes. Belongs to the "royal" category of players.
And he sings very well, too. Here with Gary Moore:

Good to see so much love for a Fort Worth boy. Besides being a great player Buddy's a great human being. Another child prodigy that's grown up and blossomed is Josh Smith. Josh excels at clean, tasteful and always musical stuff. Did I say clean?

Colin James gets some pretty amazing tones. His repertoire has changed a lot over the years, but listen to some of his blues stuff, such as:

And don't forget Anson Funderburg's classic strat tone, and Derek Trucks' sublime slide-on-an-SG/Les Paul tone!
