    Default New Orleans Piano

Mary Jean and I have been having a little e-mail thread going about Professor Longhair and New Orleans-style piano. Just thought I'd post on here and see if anyone else is interested in this style. I've been studying this kind of stuff for a couple years and really love this style. Any other Big Easy junkies lurking out there?

Awesome! So Cyber, can you play any Longhair stuff? I got Dr. John's series of books and videos and have learned some pretty cool stuff from it. Plus I just got a book with a bunch of transcriptions from Longhair, James Booker, Fats Domino and Tuts Washington. I've just about got the hang of the song "Doin' It" from that book (I think he called the same song "Stompin' with Fess" on some other CD's). Plus I got the basic licks to "Hey Little Girl" and "Hey Now Baby" down. I've been working on "Tipitina" too, but he get's a lot wilder with the rhythms on that song.

Let me know if you've got any tips on playing this style of stuff.

Boogieman, don't get CM too excited, he has to keep his chops confined for Freddy Fender for now!

Yeah, Texas has got some great piano players. I like Marcia Ball, and Gene Taylor. Gene plays more rock n roll most time, but I haven't heard anyone play it as good since Jerry Lee! I hear Marcia, Gene and some of the other piano players from Austin get together everyyear and have a "Pianorama" show with four piano players and one poor drummer trying to keep up with them all. I'd love to see that!

    Default re: Jerry Lee Lewis

    Jack,
How could I forget Jerry Lee.

Jerry Lee showed up at our prom in the "70's" Southaven, Mississippi. He was great.

He used to hang out at Hernando's Hideaway, a juke joint, in Memphis on the corner of Brooks Rd. and Elvis Presley Blvd. Not far from Graceland.

Wow! That must have been some prom! They just had a crappy dj at mine. Now I'm about as jealous of you as I was of my ma when she told me she saw Little Richard a year before I was born!

But seriously, I'm a big Jerry Lee fan. One of these days I gotta get down to Memphis and take the tour of his mansion. I hear his wife (number four?) gives the tours but you gotta be real quiet, cuz if ya wake the Killer up there's gonna be hell to pay!

I wonder if he was drinkin at that juke joint the night he decided to go "call out" the King?
