Basic Blues ChordThe basic blues chord is a dominant 7th. If you are in the key of C this would be a C7 or the notes C - E - G - Bb. An F7 would be F - A - C - Eb and a G7 would be G - B - D - F. In classical music this chord was used only as a "5" chord, but blues uses it on the 1, 4 AND 5 chords. You can use the dominant seventh or add a dominant seven to almost any chord in blues. Basic Twelve Bar Blues Progression
in C: This is the most common and normal twelve bar blues progression. It can be played in any key. More advanced blues chords include the "#9" or "+9" chord. A C (+9) chord would be the notes C - E - G - Bb - D#. The D# or the +9 is what gives the chord a very dissonant sound. The band The Doors used this chord a lot especially as a 5 chord.
